These buildings are made of brick (most of them) - a material that is sufficient by itself to enclose a building against the elements. But every one of them has been given a coat of paint. The paint might have been applied to seal failing mortar joints, but on these buildings it was more likely done to "dress them up". And many of them are painted not so much to beautify them as to make them go away.

Marriage Advice

A young colleague at work was getting married. The gang threw a work potluck lunch party thing in her honor. They asked everyone to write a little marriage advice, gathered up the responses and printed it up. My buddy tom, who knew I was in the middle of the end of my marriage, thought it would be funny if I wrote something that veered off into angry anti-relationship land.

Why I Would Like a Career at Fortis

Fortis (an insurance company that formerly occupied building near Crown Center, now occupied by Assurant) had an ad in the KC Star for an entry level position in their IT department. It was a good opportunity for a guy like me. but the want ad instructed the applicant to provide an essay explaining why he or she would like a career at Fortis IT. This struck me as more than a little presumptuous.

Kansas City is Celebrating the Art of Survival at ArtBra KC

This May, come celebrate those women who are survivors or in treatment for breast cancer, as well as those who have been affected by the disease. ArtBra KC will auction off the 70+ bras designed specifically for this event by local and out of town artists. All proceeds go directly to Missy’s Boutique at the University of Kansas Cancer Center.

The Magical Meatball Tour

Ceasar Reyes and Venus Van Horn have done it. They have brought the "best balls you'll ever put into your mouth" to Kansas City. The idea was born less than a year ago to buy a food truck and parade around town with gormet meatballs. Through the website kickstarter.com, Ceasar and Venus have brought their dream to life and are pushing for an opening event on the First Friday's in June. The hilarious duo bring creativity and imagination to their new adventure. Kansas City, get psyched about these meatballs!
