VFW Donations Aid U.S. Service Members in Haiti

Call for donations

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is assisting in humanitarian efforts in Haiti by providing U.S. service members — with relatives currently located in Haiti — with the funds necessary to purchase airline tickets to the devastated island, so that they may locate, assist or make burial arrangements for relatives affected by the recent earthquake.  Funds also may be used to help provide sustenance or other necessities to sustain life.

CANstruction Exhibition Benefits Harvesters

Uncanny Sculptures Replenish Food Bank

Inside Union Station, the grande dame of architecture in downtown Kansas City, another type of building has sprung up that will feed the hungry. CANstruction involves 16 teams of Kansas City architects, engineers, and contractors that design and build creative, colossal sculptures made only from canned food and other non-perishable food items. On display January 15–February 10, 2010 at Union Station, the structures consist of items ranging from tuna fish and tomato paste cans to peanut butter and olive jars.

Candy Exchange Benefits Smiles Change Lives

Good Works in the Community

Smiles Change Lives, a non-profit organization who provides orthodontic treatment to kids from low-income families, will be hosting a candy exchange at the City Market on Sunday, November 1 from 10 AM-2 PM. Donated candy will be shipped to U.S. military overseas. Kids can take part in many activities as well.

With a total over over 40 hours, spanning nine days, a mural in Ruby Park was created using the talents of Ron Smith, Lacey Lewis, Steve Larson, Steve Curtis, KC Wizards players, fifty fifth-graders, teachers, and other city officials.

The Bikers for Babies event held at the Kansas Speedway on Sunday, September 20, 2009 has run its course this year. However, the need for raising money and supporting the mission of March of Dimes continues. PresentMagazine.com invited parents of premature babies and supporters of Bikers for Babies to share their story. Two parents from the community, Rebecca Backs and Barry Underwood, each share their personal reasons for supporting this cause.
