El Ten Eleven, Ssion
Wednesday
Drummer Timothy Fogarty and bassist Kristian Dunn form this electro indie rock duo from Los Angeles. "We met through a guitar player friend who was trying to put together a live dance project," says Fogarty. "It didn't work out but I was really inspired by the sounds Kristian was getting out of his fretless bass. This was before the double-neck bass/guitar came into the picture. He was intrigued by how I was combining electronic drums into my acoustic kit, so we thought we'd give it a go..." Current Perspectives: Claudia Hart
Thursday, 7 PM Claudia Hart has been active as an artist, curator and critic since 1988. She creates virtual paintings that take the form of 3-D imagery integrated into photography, animated loops and multi-channel animation installations. After graduating cum laude from New York University with a B.A. in art history in 1978, Hart studied architecture at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture and received an M.S. in 1984. She then practiced as an art and architecture critic. In 1988, Hart began to exhibit with the Pat Hearn Gallery, moving from critical to artistic practice. After receiving a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1989, she shifted her practice to Europe where she spent 10 years. Hart returned to New York in 1998 to publish two illustrated books, originally catalogs for her exhibitions. She wrote, illustrated and designed “A Child's Machiavelli” and “Dr. Faustie's Guide to Real Estate Development.” Hart is currently a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is represented by bitforms gallery in New York, where she had her first solo exhibition in May.

Mary Atkins Series: April Greiman
Thursday, 6 PM Think About What You Think About: April Greiman opens the series with a transmedia talk about the unique approach to blend technology, science, word and image with color and space through her projects that range from signage and exhibitions to three-dimensional work and art commissions. The Mary Atkins Series at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art celebrates its 14th season by bringing three acclaimed and distinguished figures in art and literature to Kansas City. The annual series honors Mary McAfee Atkins, a Kentucky schoolteacher who married a Kansas City businessman. After developing a deep appreciation for the arts in her later years, Atkins bequeathed her estate for the establishment of an art museum. The Nelson-Atkins resulted from the combined generosity of Mary Atkins and William Rockhill Nelson. The 14th season of the Mary Atkins Series is dedicated to Marc Wilson. Thursday, 8-9:30 PM Prospero’s Books is excited to welcome Phil Miller (and his poetry) back to Kansas City. Miller has published six books of poetry ("Cats in the House"; "Hard Freeze"; "From the Temperate Zone" – with Keith Denniston; "Branches Snapping"; "Why We Love our Cats and Dogs" – with Patricia Lawson; and most recently "The Casablanca Fan." KCAI Presentation: What Was Dan Brown Thinking?
Monday, 7 PM Michele Fricke, professor and program head of art history at KCAI, will present “What Was Dan Brown Thinking.” In 2003, Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code” was published, preceded by the 2001 book, “Angels and Demons.” In both books, the author placed his protagonist, the Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, against a backdrop of artists and their works to spin fantastical yarns, which are admittedly exciting, compelling reads. Both books have been translated into successful movies, “Angels and Demons” the most recent and arguably the better book and movie. In this lecture we will explore the art historical claims made in these books and movies. The lecture is free and open to the public. Call 816-505-1443 by Nov. 2 to RSVP. Theatre: Farragut North
Preview: November 11-12. Show runs November 13-December 13. The show plays Tuesdays through Thursdays at 7:30 PM, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. There is a Saturday Matinee at 3 PM on November 14th and 28th. There is no show on November 26th in observance of Thanksgiving. Unicorn Theatre’s 36th season of BOLD NEW PLAYS continues with Farragut North by Beau Willimon. This behind-the-scenes look at politics focuses on Stephen, a 25-year-old hotshot press secretary, who has built a career that men twice his age envy. During a tight presidential primary, however, the backroom scheming of more seasoned operatives and a seductive teen staffer eclipse his meteoric rise. A viewing portal into the world of politics, Farragut North is an intriguing story of loyalty, lust for power and the high cost of success. This is the first of three co-productions between Unicorn Theatre and UMKC Theatre. These co-productions allow for graduate student actors and designers to work right along with professionals. It is part of the on going "Who am I" series that Steven Curtis has been conducting for the last 5 or 6 years with youth in schools here in KCK and small villages in Alaska. "I usually work with the students in their classrooms, teaching them photography and photoshop editing programs. Each student is instructed to use photography to visually create a story about who they are , how they fit into their communities and into the world in general. Most importantly it is an opportunity for them to express something about themselves or their environment. The program is sponsored by community funding, career prep organizations and state art organizations" says Curtis. Gallery #2 750 Armstrong

Opening: I Think We Are Making Progress
Saturday, 6-9 PM Curated by Eric Dobbins & Lee Piechocki. The title of this show, "I Think We Are Making Progress: New Work from Lawrence, Kansas City & Topeka," exudes optimism but with a tinge of skepticism. It offers the possibility of forward movement but with a little self-doubt. In this title there is a desire, but also an uneasiness to fully commit to the belief that we are indeed making progress. Maybe this is because progress implies linearity - a destination, a place, moment, or mindset that we can progress to. But really, where are we going, where do we want to be? Kirsten Paludan, Bobby Long
Sunday 8:00 pm Kirsten Paludan
Based in Kansas City, Kirsten Paludan is an artist who will clearly steal your heart with a song, given the chance, but she's equally capable of getting to your head as well. Songs like "Anesthesia" possess a blend of atmospheric vocals, haunting lyrics, and smartly constructed, ambient-dusted indie rock that takes up residence in murky psychic territory, settling between the imagination and the senses like a moody fog. She performs Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at The Brick. recordBar 1020 Westport Road http://www.myspace.com/musicbobbylong http://www.myspace.com/kirstenpaludan

John Kilduff - Let's Paint TV - Embrace Failare Tour
November 17-24, 6-7 PM Reception with special evening episode: Friday, November 20, 6-9 PM Begun as a public access television show in Los Angeles and now a YouTube sensation, Let’s Paint TV stars John Kilduff, who paints, blends drinks, answers phone calls, and completes a variety of other tasks (titles of past shows include “Let’s Paint the Tinman and Perform Open Heart Surgery,” and “Let’s Paint, Exercise, Play the Ukulele, and Make a BLT,” for example) –– all while wearing a suit and running on a treadmill. The show is at first a “how to paint,” “how to cook,” “how to exercise” play-by-play interview television show, but Kilduff quickly escalates to a fever-pitched, multitasking, motivational speaker, encouraging everyone to get their creative juices flowing…and not to be afraid to fail! The public is invited to attend and participate in Let’ Paint TV at Urban Culture Project Space. Kilduff will paint portraits of and otherwise interact with members of the audience. Among Kilduff’s special endeavors planned for the show will be the preparation of a Thanksgiving holiday dinner. Sonic Spectrum Music Trivia, Forrest Whitlow, Pete Pidgeon, Sean Mullady
Monday 7 PM - Sonic Spectrum Music Trivia Originally from Kentucky, Forrest Whitlow has been playing in his home base Kansas City for several years. He is a skillful, perceptive songwriter who has made a strong presence on the Kansas City music scene with his first four releases Vacation(1996), Love and Garbage(1998), Patch of Blue(2001) and the solo recording Into the Gloaming(2002). With his backing band The Crash, Forrest forged a unique sound that runs the gamut from introspective, country-tinged balladry to dark, loud, rough rock & roll workouts. The Land of X is a culmination of the group's explorations, a sprawling document that explores the darker side of the human psyche with tales of lust, murder and despair. Never a "one-note" band, Forrest & the Crash also manage to temper these edgy tales with the type of ornate balladry they are known for with songs like "Russian Gin" and the album's title track. recordBar 1020 Westport Road http://www.therecordbar.com http://www.forrestwhitlow.com/
